An Emotional Moment as Rosenior Breaks Obstacles

"Rosenior represents an excellent tactician that knows football intimately, which is the crucial factor.

"However, as Chelsea's pioneering African heritage player, it would be dishonest if I said this news doesn't move me."

Those are the words expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the exit of manager Enzo Maresca.

The French club is within the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned BlueCo which also controls Chelsea.

Statistics show only 12 black managers – not including individuals in temporary caretaker roles – in England's top flight since its inception 34 in the past.

"What really strikes me about Liam is he was raised and developed his game not far from here, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever youngsters see a figure like Rosenior in charge of the team they support, someone who looks like them, who's from their ends, from a household that champions equality… it is profound and shows them the path is there.

"So yes, it is a massive moment for the club, for London, for all young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to get on with the job."

What Do the Data Reveal?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea head coach back in the nineties and became the top flight's first black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black boss in the Premier League when he took over Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League gaffer from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of managers of colour across the English game corresponds with a lack of diversity in the boardroom.

According to the BFP 2023's report, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization revealed only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at most Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic communities.

Regarding first-team coaching level, according to data from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching roles – including senior roles – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is just five percent.

"He has undoubtedly made history in terms of his appointment as a the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we hope to witness more such appointments," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of talent that exists within ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches want the opportunity to show what they can do. We need to persist in striving to break those barriers once and for all."

Additionally, the new appointee will become one of only four permanent English managers currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's remaining major leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

16 of the 20 top-flight coaches in Serie A are Italian, Eleven of the 20 in Spain, Twelve in the Bundesliga in Germany and Ten in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane said: "I have no doubt every young English coaches with a youth development pedigree will be, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see someone get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., played for the likes of West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career culminating in a brief stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered in combating discrimination in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began penning a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the under-representation of black coaches. He pointed out that ethnicity does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities should be given on merit.

He also made the view he has often stated: that significant lack of diversity results in misunderstandings of players with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "passionate", noting that he understood the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him in moving from France to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, Rosenior also admitted to being "ashamed" to hear an unnamed staff member utter a discriminatory remark. He vowed support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since made his name in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club on Tuesday morning prior to putting pen to paper on a long-term deal at Chelsea.

Chelsea had the top flight's first black boss with Gullit and the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.
