Boston's Leader Michelle Wu Addresses Trump's Warning to Move World Cup Games from Boston
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, suggested that the city was prepared for a dispute with US President Donald Trump concerning his claim that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup tournament matches from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of the city.
Mayor Wu appeared on a local podcast this week to address criticism from the White House, which had labeled her as "far-left." President Trump had threatened that he would contact FIFA President Gianni Infantino if Boston did not "improve its situation."
A great deal of it is secured by contract so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can undo it.
Wu added, "We're in a world where for drama, for power, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at people and cities who refuse to back down and submit or be obedient to a hateful agenda."
Mayor Wu further stated, "We are going to continue being ourselves, and that means, unfortunately, we are going to be in a conversation that is challenging what Boston stands for." She finished by emphasizing her support for the Boston, declaring, "Fully committed for our city."
The President's Statements and FIFA's Involvement
Recently, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Infantino has also visited the White House and given World Cup and club championship awards to the president as gifts.
On Tuesday, Trump was questioned on recent disturbances in a Boston neighborhood that involved a police car being set on fire. He replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Gianni – the head of FIFA, who's phenomenal."
Trump continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would comply. He wouldn't love to do it. But he would do it very easily." The president also specifically targeted Wu, saying, "Boston's mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating some areas in Boston. That's a pretty big statement, right?"
Previous Warnings and Upcoming Tournament Details
Trump has previously suggested that he would have the same conversation with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are part of the 16 host cities across the continent.
The US is co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Mexico and Canada. The expanded tournament is scheduled to be played from June 11 to 19 July in the coming year.
