From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein Document Disclosure is Mixed.
Conservative responses to the limited release of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative manner.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Strong Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a President or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo outlining the redaction procedure.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness appear in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. A number of Republicans swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions violate the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s file dump grossly does not comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he continued.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Rally Behind the Release
However, some conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of documents that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet a few do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite ironic how the political left falsely accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been hiding these files for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can release as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response added.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional approval to enact a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the most vocal proponents for a complete disclosure. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained no new data.
