Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to rooftop levels and homes being swept away by strong flows.

Our team rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: a drowning victim on the island and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

Global warming is causing tropical storms more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
